‘For conspicuous heroism and devotion when rescuing, at imminent personal danger, some 400 miners entombed in the Mardy Colliery after the disasterous explosion on 23rd December, 1885.’
The medal was presented by Mr John Furley on 13 May 1886 at a crowded and enthusiastic meeting at Mardy. A total of nine St. John Lifesaving Medals in silver were awarded for this rescue. The recipient was one of two men with the same name to be awarded the medal for this rescue. Only 34 1st type St. John Lifesaving Medals in silver awarded.
