Ex D.N.W. 12 February 1997, Captain K. J. Douglas-Morris Collection.

Alfred Mills was born in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, on 12 July 1859. He entered the service as Armourer’s Crew aboard H.M.S.
Pembroke on 4 May 1880. He subsequently served aboard the Bacchante (1880-82), Excellent (1882-83) where he was advanced to Armourer on 10 January 1883, Carysfort (November 1884 to June 1887), Excellent (1888-93) and advanced to Chief Armourer on 1 April 1890. His letter of recommendation for the L.S. & G.C. medal must have preceded this advancement, the edge detail of his medal only showing him as an Armourer at the date of approval for the award on 15 May 1890. He continued to serve aboard the Vernon (1897-1900), Fox (1901-04) and was pensioned from the St. Vincent on 30 September 1905. He did not become a member of the R.F.R., but was called up on 2 August 1914 and immediately demobilised probably because he was over 55 years of age. Sold with copied service details.
