M.C. London Gazette 19 November 1917. ‘He took over command and handled his Company with great ability when his Company Commander was wounded, and reached the objective under heavy shell fire and made a strong point. He greatly inspired his men by his cheerfulness in the face of great difficulties’.

Arthur Clement Jardine was born on 28 November 1892 and educated at Rossall and St. John’s College , Oxford - gaining a B.A. in 1919. A Cadet in the Rossall O.T.C. (1906-10), he enlisted as a Private in the 16th (Public School) Battalion Middlesex Regiment on 5 September 1914. Commissioned as a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant in the 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment on 23 February 1915, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war in October 1915. He was severely wounded at Fricourt on 30 April 1916, with a bullet through the chest. Promoted Temporary Lieutenant on 8 October 1916, he returned to active service in Italy, November 1916-1918 and was wounded for the second time on 20 September 1917. Appointed a Temporary Captain on 18 July 1917 and Acting Captain on 5 October 1917, he again served in France 1918-19. He was demobilised on 21 March 1919, relinquishing his commission and retaining his rank. Post war he served in the Uganda Civil Service.
