William James Lipscombe was born in Hackney, London on 13 September 1893. He enlisted as a Private in the Yorkshire Regiment on 16 August 1910 and was promoted Corporal, 1914, Sergeant , 1916, Company Quartermaster Serjeant, 1918, Company Serjeant-Major, 1920 and Regimental Serjeant-Major, 1929. For his wartime service he was awarded the British War Medal. A duplicate of this medal was issued in 1923 as his original went down on the S.S. Egypt in May 1922. He saw service in the Third Afghan War 1919. He was commissioned as Lieutenant and Quartermaster on 3 June 1931 and served with the Green Howards in Waziristan 1936-37 for which he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 17 October 1939). Promoted to Captain on 2 June 1938 and Major on 2 June 1942, he retired on 11 November 1947. He died at Darlington on 7 October 1970. Sold with copied research.
