The fascinating collection of archive material from AIB (formerly First Trust Bank) fetched a grand total of £122,815 in an online/ live auction of British, Irish and World Banknotes at Dix Noonan Webb, the international coins, medals, banknotes and jewellery specialists on Wednesday, October 28, 2020. The Collection of archival material offered a wide range of proofs, specimens, sheets and issued notes dating from 1954 to 2012 from the Provincial Bank through to AIB and First Trust Bank. All lots had been offered in three sales over the past seven months and the proceeds will be split between Age NI and the Alzheimer’s Society.  Dix Noonan Webb will also be making a contribution and will donate 5% of the buyer’s premium (£6,140.75) to the Bank’s chosen charities.

The auctions, which comprised 330 lots and was 100% sold, attracted buyers from all over the world. The highest price of the entire Collection was the final lot - a booklet containing an official De Le Rue proposal for a polymer £10 ‘2017 New Series’, featuring two completely different proposed designs, that were never adopted, which fetched £8,500 - 14 times it’s pre-sale estimate of £400-600 and was purchased by Private Buyer [lot 595A]. The second highest price was achieved by an uncut sheet of forty specimen/proofs for an unadopted £5 trial note which sold for £3,200 against an estimate of £1,500-2,000 and was bought by Private Buyer [lot 501].

After the sale, Thomasina Smith, Banknote Specialist at Dix Noonan Webb, commented: “Over the past year, we have enjoyed handling, cataloguing and learning from the Collection, which gave a fascinating insight into the printing processes and evolution of the Bank’s paper money before it ceased issuing in 2019. We would like to thank everyone at AIB for helping us organise this special event and for their generosity towards two exceptionally worthy causes.”

Heather Stewart, Head of Sales & Service Enablement at AIB, added: “We are delighted with the funds raised at the auctions of these rare banknotes, with the amount raised exceeding initial estimates and resulting in a significant amount of funds for two very worthy local charities – Age NI and Alzheimer’s Society. We are committed to supporting the Northern Ireland community and this initiative has enabled us to support these vital charities to continue to deliver important services to those most in need.”
