PREVIEW: SILVER & OBJECTS OF VERTU 13 JUNE

Highlights at Noonans’ auction on 13 June of Jewellery, Watches, Silver and Objects of Vertu include selected silverwares such as a fine Regimental large silver peg tankard of Royal Scots Greys interest. By makers Aldwinckle & Slater, and dated for London1883, its was retailed by important London manufactures Elkington and is estimated here at £1,500-2,000.

Following on from our successful silver sale last November 2022, including, The Menagerie of Silver, Noonans are offering an assortment of further silver table birds and animals in this sale.

 

Leading the group is a handsome late 31cm high, 19th century Dutch silver model of a stag, with import marks for1898, and by maker V.S. Boven, estimated at £4,000-5,000. An engaging model of a silver grouse, with hinged wings and detachable head, and import marks for Berthold Muller, London 1902, is guided at £1,500-2,000.

A selection of finely painted miniature portraits add a touch of colour to the Objects of Vertu section – an appealing portrait of Ann Withington, attributed to Thomas Hargreaves, circa 1831, is sure to catch the eye – the beautiful young lady attired in ermine trimmed gown, and gazing assuredly at the viewer. The miniature, with companion portrait, is estimated at £400-600.

An unusual Private Collection of hand-painted Regimental artist design pattern cards of sweetheart brooches, mostly from Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd. circa 1940s, (Part 1 of a larger collection), and covering a wide range of regiments, is sure to attract collectors’ interest.

With an established track record of offering items of Royal Interest, Noonans are pleased to include in this auction a Honiton White Lace fan, formerly the Property of Princess Margaret, given to her by her grandmother Queen Mary in 1939, and used by the two Royal princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret, in the series of Christmas pantomimes performed at Windsor Castle, to help aid morale during the War years.
