PRICES SHOW EVERLASTING APPEAL OF PROOF SETS
A selection of proof sets of George V South African coins in this sale illustrates just how much rarity can inform value. Together the four sets have a combined high estimate of £80,000.
In each case the proof set of eight coins includes the Halfcrown, Florin, Shilling, Sixpence, Threepence, Penny, Halfpenny and Farthing.
Leading the field is the 1932 proof set, whose condition is about as struck, the silver with light patchy toning over reflective fields. It comes in its contemporary Pretoria Mint case and is extremely rare, with only 12 sets struck. The estimate is £20,000-30,000.
At £15,000-20,000 is the 1939 proof set – one of 30 struck – presented about as struck and in a blue South Africa Mint case. The 1930 proof set (14 struck) comes at the same estimate in virtually mint state and with the card case of issue, while the 1931 proof set (62 sets struck) is in about as struck condition, the Halfcrown and Shilling with light toning, and also comes with the card case of issue. It is expected to fetch £8,000-10,000.
