SRI LANKAN SAPPHIRES SET THE TONE FOR ANOTHER FINE DISPLAY

Sri Lankan sapphires feature strongly in Noonans’ upcoming June auction, led by an 18ct gold sapphire and diamond matched suite by Bulgari, comprising collar necklace, ear clips and ring, estimated to fetch £20,000-30,000.

A pretty Sri Lankan yellow sapphire and diamond dress ring, claw-set with an untreated cushion-shaped sapphire between transitional-cut diamond trefoils, the sapphire measuring 13.6 x 10.7 x 5.5mm, is expected to fetch £4,000-5,000.

An unusual 19th century sapphire and gem set brooch provides a colourful display – centred with a cushion-shaped Sri Lankan sapphire, within a rose-cut diamond and sapphire cluster surround and spaced by pearl highlights, beneath a ruby and emerald coronet surmount, it comes with an estimate of £2,400-3,000.

A two-row natural pearl necklace with hopes of £8,000-10,000 is the latest consignment among the highlights of this sale, which promises a fine selection of diamond and coloured gemstone jewellery.

Among the diamond jewellery is a stylish Art Deco platinum mounted diamond ring, the emerald-cut diamond weighing 2.25 carats, with VS2 clarity. The ring is estimated at £6,000-8,000.

Presented in its original fitted case, a French hardstone cameo suite, circa 1860, comprises a pendant, pair of ear pendants, and two studs, each centred with a circular hardstone cameo depicting the Goddess Diana/Artemis in profile, mounted in gold, within a pearl surround and edged with a ropetwist border. The suite has French guarantee marks, and lozenge maker’s marks. The guide is £2,600-3,000.

An Art Nouveau pendant, circa 1900, possibly by the French designer Gaston Lafitte, is an eye-catching conversation piece for any wearer, as the illustration here shows. In the form of a heart-shaped pendant displaying a female profile with gem-set flowerhead decoration, on a blue and green plique-à-jour enamel ground, with rose-cut diamond border and similarly set bale, suspended from a fancy-link chain, mounted in gold and estimated at £1,200-1,500.

Among the Objects of Vertu, a rare Charles II silver mounted wooden handled toasting fork, circa 1670, is a notable survival. The long wooden shaft is surmounted with a silver spherical terminal with suspension ring, and the maker’s mark ‘DL’ – a trefoil above and a mullet below – is struck twice, once on each mount. With triform tines, it is 94cm long and is expected to sell for £800-1,200.
